The Mom Community helps young moms transition into stable, healthy living by providing housing, security, and an opportunity for personal growth.
What is the Mom Community?
Of the babies born last year, in our community just west of downtown Atlanta, 82% were born to single moms. More than half of these families are living in poverty.
Children growing up in poverty experience elevated risks for homelessness, crime, dropping out of school, unemployment, and teen pregnancy which leads to a repeated cycle of poverty
When we saw this brokenness in our community, we started asking the following questions: What is God’s best for young moms and their babies? How can we as the church come together to support vulnerable families and bring opportunities for restoration and redemption in their lives? What preventative measures could we take?
At The Mom Community, we focus on supporting women in their journey to wholeness in the context of gospel-centered, mutually transformative relationships.
We help women imagine a desirable future for her family and set goals for reaching stability. We support her in meeting her goals.
Christy Smucker, our founder, started building relationships with teen moms five years ago and has invested in more than twenty young moms. Two years ago, she started a monthly support group for young moms that has served seven moms and nine children. With the help of volunteers, she provides childcare, a home-cooked meal, life skills and personal growth coaching, and an atmosphere of mutual support and encouragement
After years of giving personally and connecting young women with resources, she was finding a gap in services offered to young moms. With the support of an incredible network of friends and nonprofit leaders, she started working to organize the ministry for greater impact. She has been working with a fiscal sponsor and coach at Orchard, a Christian organization that helps establish nonprofits and equips leaders to do the work. She has also been taking classes for nonprofit leaders with LEAD ATL; collaborating with local, nonprofit leaders; and has been working with a group of founding members, each of whom has years of experience in social work and nonprofits.
When you invest in this ministry, you help to provide housing and comprehensive programming that will proactively address needs and offer a stable foundation for self-sufficiency and lifelong parenting. You are also giving women an opportunity to encounter Jesus through daily interactions with staff and volunteers whose lives have been changed by the gospel. The Mom Community needs your help to build a community of support for young moms.
We are currently raising funds to purchase a house and to launch our program. Please consider helping us reach our fundraising goal of raising $150,000 by October, so we can open our doors in January 2021.
